Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

1. Purpose

This policy provides guidelines for the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies. JICE’s goal is to promote the responsible use of these transformative tools as aids to human creativity and research, while upholding the fundamental principles of academic integrity, originality, and accountability.

This policy applies to all forms of content submitted to our journal, including text, figures,images, and data.

2. Core principles of AI usage

The core principles guiding the usage of AI are as follows:

i. Contributors (including authors and peer reviewers) are responsible and accountable for the originality, accuracy and integrity of their work.

ii. AI and AI-assisted technologies must be used responsibly and transparently. Any use of AI technologies must be explicitly disclosed. This is crucial for maintaining trust between authors, readers, and the editorial team. Failure to disclose may be considered a breach of publication ethics.

iii. AI and AI-assisted technologies can be used as aids but should not replace human creativity and originality in the research and publication process. Specifically:

   a. Content-generation using AI and AI-assisted technologies (including creating, analysing, drafting, or writing) any part of a submission is not permitted.

   b. Copy-editing using AI and AI-assisted technologies (including correcting, editing,or formatting) all or part of an author’s own original existing work to improve itsstructure and the clarity of the language and grammar is permitted, provided that contributors adhere to the overarching principles explicated here.

   c. In accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics’ (COPE) positionstatement on AI tools (link to:   https://publicationethics.org/guidance/cope-position/authorship-and-ai-tools?ct=t(member-insight-ai-feb-2023), AI and AI-assisted technologies cannot be credited with authorship as they are incapable of conceptualising a research design without human direction and cannot be accountable for the integrity, originality, and validity of the published work.

iv. The journal reserves the right to determine whether the use of an AI tool is permissible. 

3. For authors

i. Disclosure. Authors must disclose if and how AI tools were used. As discussed in the core principles above, content-generation using AI is not permitted, while copy-editing is. The disclosure should appear as a separate "AI Usage Statement" before the References. The disclosure must include:

  a. The name of the AI tools(s) used and the specific version

  b. A specific and brief description of how the AI tool was used

  c. A statement by the author(s) that they are fully responsible for the creation and the accuracy of the content

ii. Authorship. AI tools and large language models (LLMs) cannot be listed as an author or co-author.

 

4. For reviewers and editors

i.. The use of AI for review or editorial work presents confidentiality and copyright issues. The tool or model will learn from what it receives over time and may use it to provide outputs to others.

ii. Reviewers and editors using AI tools to generate review reports will not be invited to the journal’s review or editorial process.

iii. Reviewers who suspect the inappropriate or undisclosed use of AI in a manuscript should flag their concerns with the Journal Editor.

 

5. We will update this policy as new AI technologies emerge.
