Abstract

This study aims to explore the teaching and learning of Islamic Studies subject in an Islamic Studies College of a public university in Thailand. Using a qualitative case study, nine students from the college participated in this study. The main criterion of participant selection was that the participants must be enrolled in the Islamic Studies subject. Data collection techniques include interview, observation and document analysis. The naturalistic and emergent data were analyzed and synthesized through coding. The subcodes emerged developed themes and subthemes to answer the research questions. Findings of the study show that the teaching and learning implemented were based on meaningful and practical syllabus, feasible and appropriate. In addition, the teaching and learning implemented instilled new knowledge, achieved the learning aims and objectives, and were conducted according to plan as well as quality curriculum standard. Lecturers’ attitude, teaching style, and teaching methods were found to be helpful in supporting the teaching and learning process. The lecturers were firm but cheerful, used simple instruction with clear voice projection and had distinctive teaching styles. All students had their own prior experience and background that could enhance the learning of new knowledge, academic performance, and develop their determination to learn. Ultimately, students’ experiences related to assessment and achievement encouraged them to engage in lesson revision.
